Comment I get from Mr. DK Bhandia

Hi Jyoti Bhai,

great to see this site blog here. You have been spearheading the documentation of this Jain clan from West Bengal very nicely. I wish to add here the details of whatever I know. Bhandia family in Kolkata is a well-known Johri Saath group who have been renowned for their Jewellery and gemstone business.

My Grandfather Late Sri Puran Chandji Bhandia ( Johri ) Married his second wife Smt. Suhag Sundari from the Kothari Family of Gauhati who belonged to the Jiaganj Azimganj Clan of Jains. I am the last grandson of her last son Late Shri.Kiron Singhji Bhandia residing in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu associated with the Jewellery and Textile Business. My Elder Brother Naresh Bhandia lives in Bangalore associated with the manufacturing of PP Woven Sacs required in the cement industry. I will be glad to know more and even contribute to the efforts you are making. Please feel free to get in touch. I have a Family history tree for our family contributing data from 13 generations. I will be happy to put in inputs in it if you have any.

Thanks and regards

Dinesh Kumar Bhandia.

Mulanayaka Sacha Sumatinath

Sri Madholal Dugar of Kolkata Johari Sath has built a Jain temple in Palitana Talhati in the 19th century. This is the oldest Jain temple in Palitana Talhatti. Sumatinath, the Mulnayaka of this temple is popularly known as Sacha Sumatinath. Jain pilgrims of Palitana worship this diety before proceeding to the Palitana hills. There are other Tirthankar idols and Dadaguru dev Charans (Foot prints) in this Palitana Jain temple.

Jirnoddhar of this Palitana temple is done recently in the auspicies of Khartar Gachchha Sadhwi Shree Shashiprabha Shreeji Maharaj. A Bhaktamar temple, Dadabadi and Patavali temple is also added newly to this temple.

This Palitana temple is presently managed by Sri Ujwal Dugar, a member of Sri Madholal Dugar family.

A dharamshala is also attached with the temple built by the same Sri Madholal Dugar.

Sri Chandaprabhu Swami Temple
Kolkata

There is another temple in the complex near Parasnath. This is of Sri Chandraprabh Swami, eighth Jain Tirthankar.

This is also very beautiful temple built by Ganeshilal Kapurchand Kharad, another esteemed member of Johari Sath, Kolkata.

Ganeshilal Kapurchand Kharad Johari were mainly in ruby and sapphires business. They were manufacturing and exporting these precious stones from Burma, Shyam, Pylin and Cylon rough. They accumulated wealth out of this business and spent generously to build the temple. The temple is built some years after Rai Badridas built Parasnath glass temple of Sri Sheetal Nath.
